Message: The chemical most commonly used in autos today, HFC-134a, packs 350 times more global warming power than the approved alternative, called HFO-1234yf. The new refrigerant’s use would be subject to certain safety conditions meant primarily to address flammability concerns, according to the proposal to be published today in the Federal Register . Major automakers are betting that the alternative, developed by DuPont and Honeywell, will help them meet new federal greenhouse gas emission emissions standards for motor vehicles recently proposed by the Obama administration (ClimateWire, July 31). Climate legislation moving through Congress also calls for the general phase down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the powerful climate-warming class of chemicals that includes HFC-134a.
